Camping has long been a favorite pastime of outdoor enthusiasts and lovers of nature—but it isn’t for everyone. Let’s just say some of us prefer traditional amenities to roughing it out in the woods. If that’s you, glamorous camping—or glamping—might be more your style. Keep reading to learn about the key differences between camping and glamping.

Glamping

Where You’ll Stay

Glamping shelters are usually much sturdier and more secure than traditional tents. While a glamping shelter might still technically be a tent (depending on where you stay), it will most often more closely resemble a solid structure, complete with off-the-ground floors. Even though a glamping structure should still be set up in a natural environment, it might include amenities such as electricity, cable, and internet.

Where You’ll Sleep

Glamping usually includes beds—or cots—instead of sleeping bags. That extra level of comfort can be especially appealing to those of us who need a little more support to get a good night’s sleep.

Where You’ll Use the Restroom

When you go glamping, you’ll at least have access to a restroom. Your glamping structure might have a private bathroom, or you might have access to a communal restroom with private stalls.

How You’ll Cook

Glamping structures sometimes include stoves and ovens. That certainly makes cooking much simpler.

Where You’ll Shower

Glamping means you’ll at least have access to a functional shower—whether it’s in a communal restroom or in your glamping structure’s private bathroom. So bring your shampoo!

How You’ll Make Coffee

Since your glamping structure will likely have electricity, you can enjoy brewing a traditional pot of coffee in the morning.

How You’ll Adjust the Temperature

Some glamping units include heating and air conditioning—no matter the weather outside, you’ll be comfortable indoors.

Where You’ll Store Supplies

Most glamping structures include large pieces of furniture, such as wardrobes and dressers, that you can store your clothes in. If it has electricity, you’ll likely also have access to a refrigerator to store your food in.

What You’ll Eat

Since glamping often means you’ll have access to a fridge and oven, cooking is much easier.

Where You’ll Source Your Water

Most glamping accommodations have a source of clean, fresh water nearby.

Camping

Where You’ll Stay

Traditional camping means you’ll stay at a designated campground or set up in a remote location out in the wilderness. You can be as close to or as far from civilization as you want.

Where You’ll Sleep

When you go tent camping, bring your sleeping bag—and some extra padding, if you need it.

If you’re staying at or near a campground, you might have access to a public restroom. If you’re out in the wilderness, take your pick of nearby secluded areas.

How You’ll Cook

When you’re roughing it, cooking is often limited to what can be roasted over a campfire. Think hotdogs and s’mores. Mmmm!

Where You’ll Shower

If you’re tent camping, you probably won’t shower at all—unless you brought along a portable one. Otherwise, use sanitary wipes or find a clean body of water to bathe in.

How You’ll Make Coffee

Since there’s nowhere to plug in your coffeemaker, be prepared to brew a pot over your campfire every morning.

How You’ll Adjust the Temperature

When you’re tent camping, temperature adjustment is limited. Open or close the flaps of your tent, use a lighter or thicker sleeping bag, or add or remove layers of clothing.

Where You’ll Store Supplies

Hang your supplies to keep nosy wildlife away, or store your things in your tent (or your car, if it’s nearby) to keep them safe.

What You’ll Eat

Since you won’t have access to a fridge, pack your food accordingly. Hotdogs and s’mores are perfect for cooking over the fire. You could also bring along a Dutch oven if you’re feeling more adventurous.

Where You’ll Source Your Water

Bring along plenty of bottled water. Alternatively, get your water from the nearest clean stream—and be prepared to filter and/or boil it to be sure it’s safe to drink.
